How to register for the ServSafe Manager exam
There is no single national registration page for every candidate, which is the part that trips people up. You book either through ServSafe's own system or through a state or provider program, and the route depends on where you work and who is paying. Here is how the options differ, what you need on hand, and the mistakes that cost people weeks.
- Exam-only
- Buy an exam access code, book a proctor
- Course + exam
- Class, then exam at the end
- Remote proctoring
- Available in many jurisdictions
- Bring
- Valid government photo ID
- Typical lag
- Slots can be weeks out
The three routes to a booked exam
- Exam-only. You buy an exam access code and then register with a proctoring provider for a session, in person or remote. This is the cheapest route and assumes you are studying on your own.
- Course plus exam. You book an instructor-led or online ServSafe Manager course, and the exam is administered at the end. Costs more, and the class dates may be weeks out.
- Through your employer or a state program. Some chains and some health departments run their own administration and handle registration for you. If your employer is paying, start here, because they may require a specific provider.
Before you pay for anything
- Check which credential your jurisdiction accepts. Many require an ANSI-accredited food protection manager exam and accept more than one provider; some name a specific one.
- Check what your employer reimburses. A course you pay for out of pocket may not be the one they wanted you to take.
- Check whether you need a proctored session at all. If a Food Handler card is enough for your role, the Manager exam is the wrong purchase.
What to bring and what to expect on the day
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Photo ID | Government-issued, unexpired, matching the name on your registration |
| Exam access code | If you bought exam-only, you need the code in hand |
| Arrival | Arrive early; late arrivals are commonly refused and the fee is not refunded |
| Possessions | Phones, notes and watches are stored; nothing personal on the desk |
| Result | Usually on screen immediately; the certificate follows separately |
The three mistakes that cost the most time
- Booking the exam before you are ready. If you are scoring in the low 70s in practice, you are gambling on the exact cut score. Wait until you can score 85% twice.
- Assuming the first available slot is soon. Proctored sessions, especially in rural areas and during peak season, can be booked out by weeks. Schedule first, then study to the date.
- Buying the wrong product. Course, exam-only, and Food Handler are three different purchases. Confirm which one your requirement actually asks for.
