FoodSafePrep Pass mark

ServSafe Manager · the pass mark

What is the passing score on the ServSafe test?

75% correct — roughly 68 of the ~90 questions. The exam is not graded on a curve, there is no essay, and nobody sees a percentage. You walk out with a pass or a fail and a diagnostic report. That makes the pass mark unusually concrete: it is a number of questions, and you can train to it.

Where the number 75% actually bites

Sixty-eight correct sounds comfortable until you look at where the marks come from. The seven domains are not equally easy, and the two that fail most candidates are the two that look trivial:

Miss the whole temperature ladder and you have burned 10–12 of your 22 spare questions before the judgement questions even start. That is the real reason people who "knew the material" fail at 73%.

The score to train for: 85%, twice

Do not train to the cut score. Train one full band above it:

Practice scoreWhat it meansVerdict
Below 75%You would fail the real thing todayKeep drilling, weakest domain first
75–84%You are gambling on the cut score and on question drawNot ready — one bad domain away from failing
85%+ on two different setsYou can absorb a bad night and a badly worded questionBook the exam

The "two different sets" part matters. Scoring 85% twice on the same questions only proves you remember those questions.

What happens if you fail

You get a retake — the exam is not one-and-done. ServSafe limits how soon and how often you can retake it, so check the current retest rules with your proctor rather than relying on forum posts. Two things make a retake almost automatic:

  1. Read the diagnostic report. It names the domains that failed you. A retake without studying exactly those is a coin flip with a fee.
  2. Fix the numbers first. If the diagnostic shows temperature or sanitizing, that is the cheapest 10 questions you will ever recover.

Try one at the pass-mark difficulty

A roast is taken out of the oven and reads 130°F in the thickest part. What must you do before serving it?
  • Serve it — it is within range for roasts
  • Continue cooking to 145°F for 15 seconds — correct
  • Cool it to 41°F within 2 hours
  • Hold it at 130°F or hotter until served

Continue cooking to 145°F for 15 seconds. Whole-meat roasts have a 145°F minimum (with a 15-second hold); 130°F is not servable from the oven. Note how the wrong answers are all real ServSafe numbers from other rows of the chart — that is exactly how the real exam tests the ladder. FDA Food Code 3-401.11

Questions people ask

Is the passing score the same in every state?

The ServSafe Manager exam and its 75% cut score are national. What varies by state is whether ServSafe is the accepted certification and how often renewal is required — check your local health department's rules before you book.

Does the ServSafe exam deduct points for wrong answers?

No. It is raw correct answers as a share of the scored questions, so never leave a question blank — an unanswered question and a wrong answer cost exactly the same.

How long is a passed certificate valid?

Five years for the ServSafe Manager certification, though some jurisdictions require renewal sooner. The clock is a reason not to sit the exam "just to see" — every failed or early attempt spends the same fee.
